Bail Hearing for GK Shamim Delayed for 33rd Time Amid Ongoing Legal Uncertainty

The High Court has once again postponed the bail hearing of controversial businessman and former Jubo League leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim, also known as GK Shamim, marking the 33rd consecutive delay. Shamim, arrested in 2019 by RAB, was found with firearms, cash, foreign currency, and Fixed Deposit Receipts (FDRs) worth Tk 165 crore. He was later sentenced to 10 years in prison for laundering Tk 195 crore to Singapore and Malaysia.

Despite claims from his defense that all assets were lawfully acquired and that the state failed to prove the allegations, Shamim remains entangled in a prolonged legal battle. His total assets were officially verified at Tk 353 crore by the National Board of Revenue—Tk 56 crore more than what was cited in the case. Letters have also been issued to release assets from 29 related organizations.

At the time of his arrest, Shamim’s firm, GK Builders, was handling government contracts worth Tk 4,600 crore, which were subsequently revoked. Although he was initially granted bail and the sentence was temporarily suspended, the latest hearing continues to be deferred, deepening the uncertainty around his case.
