Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as the acting head coach of the men’s red-ball cricket team, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Saturday.
Previously serving as the team’s bowling coach and assistant head coach, Azhar will continue in his new role until the end of his current contract. His appointment comes as the PCB prepares the team for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship cycle.
A seasoned figure in Pakistan cricket, Azhar is known for his tactical acumen, leadership, and success in red-ball cricket, including two County Championship titles. The PCB highlighted his deep game knowledge and international exposure as key factors in his selection.
Azhar replaces former fast bowler Aaqib Javed, who held the position on an interim basis after Jason Gillespie’s departure late last year. His first assignment as head coach will be leading Pakistan in their upcoming home Test series against South Africa, marking the start of their new World Test Championship campaign.
The PCB expressed confidence that Azhar’s leadership will enhance the team’s strength, discipline, and performance on the global stage.
