A deadly landslide struck the Gunung Kuda mine in Bobos village, Cirebon Regency of Indonesia’s West Java province on Friday, killing at least 13 people, with several others reported missing. The disaster occurred around 10:00 a.m. local time, and rescue efforts are ongoing despite challenges posed by thick layers of rock.
Five individuals sustained serious injuries and several others were lightly wounded, according to Ade Dian Permana, head of West Java’s search and rescue office. Four excavators have been deployed, but progress is slow due to the heavy rock debris. Authorities expect to continue rescue operations on Saturday, fearing more victims may still be trapped.
The West Java Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency has urged nearby residents and miners to remain alert for the risk of further landslides. Multiple agencies, including rescue teams, police, soldiers, and volunteers, are involved in the search effort. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi announced that the mine will be shut down permanently following the incident.
