ASEAN Unveils Strategic Plan to Become World’s Fourth-Largest Economy by 2045

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) unveiled a bold five-year strategic plan on Tuesday aimed at transforming the bloc into the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2045. Released during a leaders’ summit in Malaysia, the 41-page roadmap outlines key goals including harmonizing trade standards, boosting financial integration, enhancing regional mobility, and adopting sustainable industry practices to attract foreign investment.

The plan urges deeper economic cooperation among ASEAN’s 10 member states—Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Brunei—and emphasizes the need for improved energy security, supply chain resilience, and transport connectivity.

Warning that “business as usual will not suffice,” the strategy addresses looming challenges such as geopolitical tensions, evolving trade dynamics, climate change, and demographic shifts, calling for greater agility and regional unity to drive long-term growth.
