Alcaraz Survives Scare Against Fognini to Advance at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz narrowly avoided an early Wimbledon exit, overcoming Italy’s Fabio Fognini in a tense five-set first-round match, winning 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Despite his victory, the defending champion admitted he was far from his best, struggling with nerves, a low first-serve percentage, and 62 unforced errors.

“Playing the first match on Centre Court is never easy,” Alcaraz told the crowd, acknowledging that while he practised well on grass, Wimbledon “feels different,” and he needs to improve his serve and return in upcoming rounds.

Fognini, ranked 138th and playing his final Wimbledon, challenged Alcaraz throughout with his trademark skill and touch, even taking the match to a deciding fifth set. Only in the final set did Alcaraz regain control, dominating after a medical break delayed play.

Though not his cleanest performance, Alcaraz’s resilience ensured he remained in contention for the title, proving that at Grand Slams, a win—no matter how scrappy—is all that matters.
