The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested Sohag Patwari, the fifth member of a fraud ring that impersonated ACC officials to extort money from victims. Sohag, 40, was detained on Monday from his rented house in Mugda, Dhaka.
Earlier, four members of the group, including ringleader Selim, were arrested on Sunday. The arrests followed a Facebook post by Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP) southern region, alleging that bribes were being demanded in the ACC’s name for clearances.
The ACC formed a five-member investigation team, leading to the gang’s identification. Recovered items include fake IDs, cameras, passports, and multiple SIM cards used in their operations. The group had been using fake Facebook accounts and impersonating ACC officials to defraud people in the name of settling cases. Legal action has been initiated against them.
