Abbas Warns of Election Crisis if December Deadline Missed, Criticizes Interim Government’s Foreign Reliance

BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas reiterated his demand for national elections to be held by December, warning that any delay could lead to a permanent collapse of the electoral process in Bangladesh. “If elections are not held in December, there will never be elections in this country,” he said, accusing the interim government of plotting to hand the nation over to foreign powers.

Speaking at a prayer gathering and food distribution event in front of BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan on May 30—marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of party founder Ziaur Rahman—Abbas criticized Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for remarks made in Japan suggesting only BNP wants December polls. “Dr Yunus himself first proposed the December timeline,” Abbas stated, calling his recent comments contradictory.

Abbas also claimed the interim government lacks the capacity to implement meaningful reforms, especially compared to the reforms introduced by late President Ziaur Rahman in health and education. He further slammed the reliance on foreign consultants, saying, “They don’t love the country. How can they reform it?”

Other BNP leaders, including Mir Newaz Ali and Tanvir Ahmed Robin, attended the event organized by BNP’s Ward No. 13 (Paltan Police Station) branch.
