Forty-eight VIP prisoners, including prominent figures such as Rashed Khan Menon, Shajahan Khan, Hasanul Haque Inu, Anisul Haque, Salman F Rahman, Kamrul Islam, and Farhad Hossain, have been transferred to the Special Central Jail in Keraniganj, Dhaka. The transfer took place in two phases, with 24 prisoners moved on Monday, June 23, and the remaining 24, including Menon and Inu, transferred on Tuesday. They are housed in designated buildings with four prisoners per room.
The prison superintendent, Tayeb Uddin, confirmed the transfer, stating it is part of a phased relocation of divisional prisoners arrested in connection with the July-August massacre case. IG Prisons Brigadier General Syed Mohammad Motaher Hossain assured that strict security measures are in place, including body and luggage scanners, archway gates, CCTV monitoring, and mobile phone network jammers to prevent illegal communications.
The newly renovated Keraniganj special jail, previously a women’s facility inaugurated in December 2020 but unused due to staffing shortages, has been repurposed for male prisoners. The formal operations began on June 21, with the jail having a capacity of 300 prisoners. In a related development, 56 life-sentenced prisoners across the system have been ordered to be released after their sentences were commuted.
