27 Maoists, Including Top Leader Basav Raju, Killed in Major Encounter in Chhattisgarh

In one of the largest anti-Maoist operations in recent years, 27 Maoists were killed in an encounter with Indian security forces in the Abujhmad region of Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh on Wednesday (May 21). Among the dead was Basav Raju, a top leader of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and a key figure holding the rank of General Secretary.

The joint operation was conducted by District Reserve Guard (DRG) units from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Kondagaon, following intelligence that senior Maoist leaders were hiding in the area. The encounter also claimed the life of one DRG personnel, with several others injured.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the operation as a historic success in India’s fight against Naxalism, marking the first time such a high-ranking Maoist leader has been neutralized.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai commended the bravery of the forces, reiterating the government’s long-standing appeal for Maoists to surrender peacefully. He noted this was the second major operation in a month, following a similar action in April that resulted in the deaths of 31 Maoists, including a minor.

The encounter took place near the Kareguttalu hills, along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border, a known Maoist stronghold and hotspot for rebel activity.
