Twenty-seven former members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) were released from Kashimpur Central Jail on Thursday, following a court order granting them bail earlier in the week. Family members gathered at the prison gate to receive their loved ones upon release.
Jail authorities confirmed that the individuals were among a group of 40 former BDR personnel who were granted bail on Monday by Judge Ibrahim Miah of the Special Court at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. The bail was issued in connection with a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act related to the 2009 BDR mutiny.
Mohammad Al Mamun, Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail, told BSS that the prison received the bail bonds for the 27 individuals on Wednesday afternoon. After completing necessary verifications, they were released the following day.
The BDR mutiny, which took place at the Peelkhana headquarters on February 25, 2009, resulted in the deaths of 57 army officers. Two separate cases were filed in the aftermath of the incident, one of which involved charges under the Explosive Substances Act.
