A devastating bus crash on a Nigerian highway claimed the lives of 21 athletes on Saturday as they returned from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun state. The accident, which occurred without involvement from other vehicles, is believed to have been caused by driver fatigue or excessive speed following a long overnight journey back to Kano in northern Nigeria.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported the crash and noted the high risk associated with such lengthy travel under strained conditions. The athletes had participated in a range of events, including wheelchair basketball and traditional West African wrestling, with President Bola Tinubu previously praising the festival as a symbol of national unity and resilience.
Road accidents remain a major issue in Nigeria, where poor infrastructure and unsafe driving practices contribute to thousands of deaths annually. In 2023 alone, the FRSC recorded over 9,500 road crashes resulting in more than 5,400 fatalities. This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved transport safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across the country.
